Funding your care

CDHCI funding — what it covers, who qualifies, and how to apply.

Client Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) is an Alberta Health Services program that lets eligible clients choose their own home care agency. We're a registered provider — and we'll help you navigate every step.

What is CDHCI?

Publicly funded care, your choice of provider.

CDHCI is an option for Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) Home and Community Care clients to self-direct their own care. Rather than being assigned a provider, you choose a registered agency — like Family Choice Home Care Services Airdrie — that best fits your needs.

Your agency submits claims directly to Alberta Blue Cross, the program administrator. There is no out-of-pocket billing to you for covered hours — ALA pre-approves a maximum number of hours per month and your agency is reimbursed directly.

Eligibility

Who qualifies for CDHCI in Alberta?

You may be eligible if all of the following apply:

You have a valid Alberta Health Care number and live in a community setting (not a facility).

An ALA Case Manager has assessed you and determined you need home care services.

Your Case Manager determines CDHCI is a suitable model that will meet your care needs.

There is no conflict of interest with any other ALA policy or service agreements.

You, or the person managing your CDHCI care, are willing and able to assume the responsibilities of self-directing and monitoring your care.

You do not need an Alberta Blue Cross plan to be eligible for CDHCI.

What's covered

Services covered under CDHCI.

Services are determined by your Home and Community Care assessment and may include:

Personal care

Assistance with scheduled care tasks including personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, mobilization and transferring, home exercises, nutrition, medication assistance, and respiratory care.

Homemaking

Tasks essential to keeping you safely in your home that are directly related to health maintenance. Note: homemaking is not a stand-alone service and may be limited in scope by ALA. You are expected to explore other options before homemaking is included in your plan.

Respite care

Temporary relief for your informal caregivers when you cannot safely be left alone, as determined by your ALA Case Manager.

How to apply

Four steps to get started with CDHCI.

01

Contact Assisted Living Alberta

Call ALA Home and Community Care to request an assessment. An ALA Case Manager will evaluate your care needs and determine whether CDHCI is a suitable option for you.

02

Receive your authorization

If approved, your Case Manager will authorize a maximum number of care hours per month. This authorization is what allows a registered agency to begin providing and billing for your care.

03

Choose Family Choice Home Care

Select us as your CDHCI-registered agency. We'll connect you with an RN who will build a personalized care plan around your authorized hours, your routines, and your preferences.

04

We handle the billing

We submit claims directly on your behalf. You receive the care — we take care of the paperwork.
